Leg Warmers to Knit or Crochet

A comment left today on my blog asked for some help on finding a pattern for crocheting leg warmers. Now that it is winter, maybe this website is one you would like to visit, too. The pattern is also converted for knitting if that is your mojo.

Here is the website and the directions follow from their webpage: Legwear:
These leg warmers will be most appreciated in the dead of winter when temperatures plummet and winds wail, but be sure to have them crocheted and ready to wear.

Directions are given for size 9-11. You will need two 4 ounce, skeins of 4 ply yarn and sizes I and K crochet hooks.

Gauge: 3 hdc equal 1 inch

Starting at lower edge with smaller hook, ch 30, join with sl st to form ring, ch 2, do not turn.
Row 1: Sc in each ch, join with sl st in top of ch-2, ch 2, do not turn.
Rows 2 through 8: Repeat Row 1.
Row 9: With larger hook, ch 2, hdc in each sc across, join with sl st in top of ch-, ch 2, turn.
Repeat Row 9 to length desired, after last sl st, fasten off
Knitting pattern: "I didn't really use a pattern, I just used a little math and knit a 1 x 1 rib. I kept knitting until they were long enough to stretch up to my thighs if cold weather required." Courtesy of VanillabeanKnits

  2. Laura: if you don't knit, I don't know where you would buy these. At $15/hr knitting time and materials, they would be too expensive to sell...maybe $75 if you really want a pair. Thank you for the comment.

  5. I also don't understand, where is the knitting pattern? All I see are the crochet directions. Am I missing a link or something?

  7. Hi, are the crochet directions above for using a single colour? I'm a beginner and I'm confused whether the 'join with a slip stitch' is to add a new colour or simply to join the ends of the ring together. To join a ring together I had been taught to simply use the first stitch to put your hook through when doing the last stitch of that ring.
Thanks for this though, I think I'll enjoy this as a project (once I get the problems cleared up!) x

  8. Amy, just change colors of yarn at whim. You can always purchase self striping yarn at most Michael's or Hobby Lobby stores. Etsy is a great place to buy yarn on line. When you go to Etsy.com just create an account,,free, and search for self striping yarns. There are lots of independent dyers who dye in stripes. If you are in the UK, Folksy would be your place to shop online for the same.

You are correct about adding new colors in crochet by using your last ring to hook into with a new slipped stitch. Don't overthink it, just play and it will come to you. Make sure you have a basic crochet book for diagrams, etc. good luck!

  9. How many skeins for the knit version? The picture is the knit version, correct? You also used worsted yarn correct? Did you do increases or decreases for the knit version? Meaning, did you begin at the top or bottom?

  10. Original posting here:

The ones shown were knit in worsted yarn weight; begin at top; and I did a couple of decreases at the bottom ten inches, as it is a forgiving pattern
