Butterflies as Photographed by C. Marley

Flipping through the pages of Christopher Marley's Pheromone coffee table book of bugs and other insect critters makes me gasp at all the colors they wear on their backs.  Philippine weevils don't seem to care that wearing bright red makes them look fat.

Yesterday I bought a 24"x30" canvas.  I'll paint three butterflies, side by side, mixing up spatial orientation.  Don't the colors seem unreal?  Here are my picks from Marley's book:

Marley's background was always white.  I am thinking a warm background of yellow/burnt copper. What is you favorite butterfly and which one would you omit?

This video was first published by Linda on her blog today, and it is worth a listen.

  2. I also love bug books, and of course, butterfly and moth books. I usually come out of the library with a stack of them.

The video was upsetting to me. Although I think it's interesting what this man has been through-I really don't like the idea of people and technology merging like this. I can't write about it intelligently I guess-but I have a bad feeling about it.

Sorry-I don't mean to rain on your day!

I love your art, and can't wait to see what you paint!

  4. The last picture holds the colours I like the most at the moment - they are all so pretty and I imagine a vibrant background will really bring them out. Cant wait to see how it turns out. Betty x

  5. Butterflies are such beautiful creatures. I'm amazed at how many varieties there are when I see them at CA Academy or Six Flags. I love how they're blessed with color.
I'll be awaiting to see your creation!

  6. Hi Nancy *hugs*
ohhhhhhh how pretty those butterflies are. I can't wait to see how you paint them...they are just gorgeous!

My favourite is number 1, number 2 and number 3....I would omit number 4. I was cheating with the numbers but its too hard to choose from the first 3!

    Have fun with them.

  7. Wow! What beauty! I like them all, but I guess my faves are the one that seems to be a luna moth (#3) and the big blue morpho-looking one at the bottom.

  9. I think I like the last one best - the other blue one looks unreal and actually enamelled! And the yellow one is just plain bizarre!

I look forward to seeing what you create with them all as inspiration though.
