Hollyhocks, and Note to Self

The frisket I was using was old.  It was too thick and would not rub off the paper; ruined my hollyhock and pig picture. Kept trying. Failed.

Flowers have an expression of countenance as much as men and animals. Some seem to smile; some have a sad expression; some are pensive and diffident; others again are plain, honest and upright, like the broad-faced sunflower and the hollyhock.
Henry Ward Beecher (June 24, 1813 - March 08, 1887)

Updated 7/17/12 with frisket still there:

Must try to watercolor hollyhocks again.  Get new frisket at store.

  1. I still love the pig painting and the dog one-I love your art!!!! I must show a painting I did of a hollyhock a few years ago, and one of my lilies....Don't have a scanner though, so I have to just take photos of my art.

  2. You make me think I need to go outside and turn the corner to check on my hollyhocks. I love your art, too!

  3. Sorry it didn't work the way you wanted. If those hollyhocks were in my yard they would look brown & yellow because the lack of water is turning everything into fall colors way too early!

  6. Ugh, I am so sorry about the frisket! Very frustrating. I've had the same thing happen to me before. But I want to encourage you not to abandon the painting! The pigs look great! There is a professional artist in our town who leaves his frisket right there on the painting. Not sure why, but he does and it works well. And personally I have found that I sometimes like my painting better before I take the frisket off - I think because the pigment over the frisket gives a softer light than the stark white paper. Just a thought:-)

  8. I love looking at your work - I'm not really a painter/drawer, so it's fun to see how you approach all your different arts and crafts.

  9. Hi Nancy *hugs*
Well you are still doing a great job even though that frisket or whatever it is...isn't working for you. I wish I could do that.
Aren't hollyhocks wonderful? I love the definition of them too.
Hope you are having a great week so far.

  10. I think the final result is awesome, Nancy. I like how there aren't any defined lines. I love the pigs' two-tonedness.
